When To Replace Your Skid Plate

The skid plate is a wear item. It rides directly on the slab every foot you cut, and it is meant to be replaced.

When the center slot is no longer straight, or is no longer its original size, it is time to replace the skid plate. Once that slot loses its shape or opens up past where it started, it no longer guides the blade the way it was designed to, and your cut quality goes with it.

Per the Gorilla GCT-8 Series III manual, the skid plate should remain in contact with the cutting surface in order to function properly. A plate that is worn thin, distorted, or no longer sitting flat on the slab should be swapped out.

Check Your Saw’s Production Date Before Ordering

Gorilla revised the GCT-8 skid plate for saws manufactured on or after January 1, 2023. This R2 plate is the 2023-and-newer version. Saws built before that date take the earlier pin-style plate. If you are not sure which revision your saw takes, give us a call before ordering and we will get you the right one.

Early Entry Cutting

Early entry sawing places control joints in green concrete, as soon as 0–2 hours after finishing and before final set, depending on weather conditions. The skid plate holds the slab surface alongside the blade during that cut, which is why a plate in good condition matters to the quality of the joint.
