CHOOSING THE RIGHT CORE BIT FOR THE JOB

Concrete and masonry do a great job of supporting structures and keeping things in (or out). But what if you need to get through the wall or floor? That’s where core drills come into play.

Depending on the hardness of the material, your first decision will be whether to go with a dry or wet bit. Soft brick and block can be cut with a dry bit; concrete, stone and other hard, dense materials call for a water-cooled bit.

Dry Core Bits

Dry Star Blue Diamond Core Bits are made for coring soft brick and block using intermittent cuts that let air cool the bit.  They have good quality intermittent diamond cutters and good coring value with an 11” drilling depth. Dry Star Blue Diamond bits work with both hand-held core drills or right-angle grinders and are an excellent choice for lighter-duty, general purpose coring.

For harder brick or long-term use on multiple projects, Dry Premium Black Diamond Core Bits are made with the highest quality diamonds for the best coring performance. Premium Black Diamond bits are made with a heavier barrel wall and have wider segments to cut through harder brick and prevent segment loss. They have an 11” drilling depth and are available with 5/8” to 11” hubs.

Water-Cooled Bits

Star Blue Wet Diamond Core Bits are general purpose average- to light-duty bits for water-cooled coring of cured concrete and hard materials.  They have good quality diamond cutters and good coring value. Star Blue bits have a cut depth of 13” and are available in 17 hub diameters from 1” to 10”. Hubs up to 3” can be used with hand-held drill motors; larger diameters require mounted rigs.

The turbo segmented Heavy Duty Turbo Orange Wet Diamond Core Bit has very high quality diamond cutting segments with long coring life for use in medium aggregate concrete with moderate steel.  With serrated segments for a faster core, this water-cooled bit comes in 1½” to 16” diameters. Up to 14” diameter bits have a standard core length of 13”, while 16” diameter bits have a standard core length of 19”. Turbo Orange Wet Diamond Core Bits may be ordered with custom bonds, and extra core length is available.

Thin wall hand-held wet diamond core bits are perfect for use with a Weka core drill.  They offer general purpose, fast coring with thinner segments that go through less material for an overall faster core. These premium-quality ½” to 6” diameter bits are also available in different lengths and bonds for cutting through tile or hard stone. Bits up to 7/8” have a 12” core length; 1” and larger have a 13” length.
